Architectural services
Since graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1982, I have been the go-to architect for a number of relatively high-profile projects around South Africa. Most of my career has been spent working in my own practice, where I’ve been involved in a wide range of projects, from small domestic alterations to larger, special project commissions. My portfolio includes airports, lodges, and award-winning residential projects, among others.
Conceptual Design
In the Conceptual Design stage, I begin by meeting with you on-site to thoroughly understand your ideas and requirements. Through detailed discussions and reviewing any initial sketches or ideas you provide, I develop a building design concept that aligns with your vision. Regular communication via email, WhatsApp, and Zoom ensures that you are involved at every step, and I refine the concept until it excites you and meets your expectations.
The drawings presented during this phase are preliminary hand-drawn sketches that offer a clear understanding of the overall design direction, basic planning, and initial elevation ideas. This stage is only complete when you are fully satisfied with the concept, at which point I move on to the next phase.
Design Development
During the Design Development stage, the approved concept is further refined into preliminary CAD drawings at a 1:100 scale. I continue to collaborate closely, incorporating any changes, modifications, or improvements you may suggest. The goal is to finalize the building’s design, staying within the agreed-upon parameters.
At this stage, the drawings become more detailed, including plans, general sections, and initial elevations, though they remain in a raw form. This phase concludes once you are happy with the developed design and are ready to move forward with more detailed submission drawings.
Submission for Approval
The Submission and Approval stage involves transforming the preliminary CAD drawings into a comprehensive set of detailed drawings ready for contractor pricing and submission to local authorities. These drawings include fully dimensioned and annotated plans, sections, elevations, as well as layouts for drainage, stormwater, and electrical systems, along with a site plan and schedules for windows and external doors.
While client meetings are less frequent at this stage, modifications can still be made as needed. Once the drawings are complete, I handle the submission process, ensuring all required copies and documentation are provided to the local authority. I monitor the submission process remotely to secure timely approval.
Architectural Supervision
Full Architectural Supervision is an optional service that involves overseeing the construction process to ensure the project is built according to plan. Alternatively whilst it’s primarily client-dependent, I am also available to conduct periodic inspections and provide a final snag list, identifying any issues that need addressing before the contractor’s final payment.
This supervision is typically minimal unless specific contractor issues arise, in which case I am available for consultation and problem resolution, either on-site or online. This flexible approach ensures the project runs smoothly, with my expertise on hand whenever required.
