Hendrik Van Eck Airport Terminal Building – Phalaborwa
Designing the Hendrik Van Eck Airport Terminal in Phalaborwa was an opportunity to create something truly unique—a gateway to the bush that would leave a lasting impression on travelers. From the outset, my intention was to craft a building that exudes the spirit of adventure and excitement that every visitor to the Kruger National Park should feel. The terminal needed to reflect the distinctive character of Phalaborwa while meeting the functional demands of a modern airport.

One of the key features of this project was integrating elements that resonate with the natural environment and the cultural heritage of the area. We worked with local materials and traditional design motifs, ensuring that the terminal not only served its purpose efficiently but also provided an immersive experience from the moment travelers set foot in the building. The thatched roofs, earthy tones, and organic forms were all carefully chosen to blend with the surrounding landscape, creating a seamless transition between the built environment and the natural world.

The airport now processes passengers efficiently while maintaining its unique charm. The terminal can handle the daily flow of travelers eager to explore the wonders of Kruger National Park, providing them with a memorable start to their journey.

The project was a blend of preservation and innovation, ensuring that the airport remains a vital part of the region’s tourism infrastructure while enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
